PADDLE ALL SUMMER CAMP COUNSELOR

The Ottawa River Canoe Club (ORCC) is looking for an enthusiastic person to work as a Summer Camp Counsellor for the Paddle All camp. 

Paddle All camp offers unique and inclusive options for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities! Recreational and sprint canoes and kayaks are used to introduce our campers to the sport of CanoeKayak. The daily on-water activities will include safety orientation, technical instruction, games, individualized adaptations, and support on the water. 

Essential Qualifications: (must be able to demonstrate through references): 

  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn 
  • Outstanding communication and collaboration skills 
  • Exemplary organization skills
  • Vulnerable Sector Check for applicants over 18, a minimum of 2 personal references for applicants under 18 
  • Ontario Pleasure Craft Operators Card*
  • CPR-C, AED, and Standard First Aid* 
  • Coaching Association of Canada; National Coaching Certification Program; Sprint Canoe Kayak Community Sport Trained*
  • Safe Sport Trained* 

*Note: Applicants must be willing to obtain these certifications before the start of employment if they are not already certified.

Assets: 

  • Previous job experience in the proximity of water (swimming, paddling, water-skiing, etc.). 
  • Previous job experience as a camp counselor 
  • Previous experience working with individuals living with developmental and intellectual disabilities or ASD. 
  • National Lifeguard certification 
  • Previous paddling experience 
  • Experience teaching fundamental movement skills 

Duties: 

  • Together with the rest of the camp counselors, introduce the campers to the basics of a recreational canoe, kayak, and other paddle sports. 
  • Work collaboratively with the team and volunteers to ensure all camp logistics are in place and the programs are delivered flawlessly. 
  • Follow basic guidelines for Canoe Kids Camp programs developed by Canoe Kayak Canada and the ORCC Head Coach. 
  • Teach and apply basic water safety techniques during all camp activities 
  • Supervise participants in all aspects of camp: swim assessment, canoeing, kayaking, dragon boating, games, field trips to the beach, crafts, and pre and post-camp care. 
  • Promote and encourage sport in a fun and safe environment. 
  • Teach physical literacy and help implement the campers’ recreation plan and/or personal accommodations when needed. 
  • Assist a camper 1:1 with the integrated option when necessary. 

Term: June 23rd to August 29, 2025

  • Hours: ~8:00 to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday (except long weekends) 
  • Salary: $19/hour
