How about two scoops of Nebraska—history and literature! We will take a close look at Nebraska’s seminal period when pioneers fought against —and learned to love-- the unyielding sod and fierce weather. Students will dig into this important historical period, which Willa Cather, one of America’s greatest writers, uses to tell the pioneers’ tale as well as a story of young lovers, struggling to find each other. In addition, students will read Mari Sandoz and Black Elk Speaks

Family provides: O Pioneers! By Willa Cather, Miss Morissa by Mari Sandoz, and Black Elk Speaks by John Niehardt.
