Start date: Saturday, May 10 2025.
Schedule:
Saturday, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM ,
Handbuilding Classroom ,
Location: Handbuilding Classroom
Description:
In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to explore sgraffito-based decorating techniques utilizing underglazes, glazes, and terra sigillata. Zoe will bring the class through creating imagery for your leatherhard pots with custom stenciled drawings and found textures, as well as building upon the imagery free-handedly to create inviting surfaces. Students will learn to experiment with uncommon techniques such as utilizing glaze on leather hard clay, as well as learn about finishing surfaces with earthenware terra sigillata on bone dry clay. In this workshop, Zoe will also briefly touch base on the handbuilding techniques she utilizes in her practice.
Workshop schedule:
9am - 10am: Arrival and tech set-up (make sure your phone is capable of Zoom and is fully charged!)
10am - lunchtime: Demonstration of a couple of the unique or unconventional hand building techniques Zoe uses in her work.
Demonstration of the use of imagery traced on plastic in conjunction with free-hand drawing and found textures to build up a layered and meaningful imagery.
Lunchtime - We will break for a 30 minute lunch only. Please bring a packed, ready to eat lunch.
Afternoon - Zoe will guide participants in the creation of imagery using traced imagery, found textures, sgrafitto tools, and Stroke & Coat glazes on leather hard tiles and/or your own leather hard pots. Provided tiles will be red clay (M390) as red earthenware is used by Zoe. Participants will also learn how to finish surfaces with red clay-based terra sigillata on bone dry clay tiles and/or your own bone-dry pots to compliment and elevate your work's imagery.
The portions of the workshop containing Zoe's demonstrations will be available for viewing by workshop participants for 3 months following the workshop to give you more time to absorb and make notes on the lessons!
--- Please note that the entirety of the workshop will be recorded, but only the demonstrations by Zoe will be made available for viewing. We may use tiny snippets of the total recording for promotional purposes but WILL NOT ever include images/videos of your person without a signed release from you ---
