Description:
This workshop invites participants to examine what we centre as knowledge—and why. Together, we will explore the societal mechanisms that position some ideas as dominant while marginalizing others. Participants will reflect on the forms of knowledge they hold and how these have been shaped by personal, cultural, and institutional influences. We will also consider the impact of excluded or non-mainstream knowledge/s on society and what this means for our shared and individual experiences. Instructor: Jeanette Schmid has been active for more than 40 years as a social work practitioner, educator, researcher and volunteer in multiple, diverse settings. This experience spans South Africa (her country of origin), Switzerland, the USA and Canada. She was a VIU social work instructor from 2016-2024; and has been on the editorial board of the Canadian Social Services Review for almost 6 years. Since retirement, Jeanette has continued with social work research and with a colleague is editing the International Handbook for Radical, Ethical Social Work that will bring together several international contributions. Social justice and social transformation sit at the core of Jeanette’s professional efforts.
