Description:

The third in a series of seminars dealing with ideas which have reverberated through informed discourse down the ages. The concept of the four elements (earth, water, air and fire) was extended by Aristotle to include a fifth, the aether. The ancient aether survives in modern physics as a form of dark energy called quintessence, a speculative fifth force. Aether evolved over two millennia, yet its essence survives today. Why?

Instructors: Philosopher John Black and physicist Russell McNeil taught for many years in the interdisciplinary Liberal Studies BA program at VIU, thus complementing their disciplinary training with exposure to the history of ideas as revealed in a wide range of academic and creative approaches.
