Description:
Italian culture and cuisine are known the world over, but there was a time when Italian immigrants were barely tolerated. For nearly 100 years, Italian emigration represented “the largest exodus ever from one European nation.” In Canada, Italian immigrants were labelled “scabs” by labour unions, deemed “undesirable” by the federal government, and classified as “enemy aliens” by the RCMP. Instructor: Former public health nurse, Lynne Bowen has a Masters degree in Western Canadian History from the University of Victoria. She has written seven books of popular history which have won several awards including the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Writing British Columbia Hisory, the Hubert Evans Nonfiction Prize and F.G. Bressani Literary Prize for Creative Nonfiction. She taught creative writing at the University of British Columbia for fourteen years. She is married, has three children, three grandchildren and has lived in Nanaimo since 1972.
