Description:

Did the walls of Jericho fall to Joshua’s trumpets? Was the story of the creation of ancient Israel after an exodus from Egypt true? Was there a historical Jesus?  There are endless conflicts that take place over the Judeo-Christian Bible and its interpretation, often driven by literal versus scientific interpretations of the text.  This course will shine an archaeologist’s lens on Biblical stories. I will provide a historical context for them, showing when books—both Old Testament and New-- were written and by whom, and assessing the archaeological and historical evidence for the stories we read there.

Instructor: Mitchell Allen, PhD (UCLA), is a research associate in archaeology at UC Berkeley. He has taught archaeology for over 20 years, and has done fieldwork in Israel, Afghanistan, and California.
