Description:

By the end of World War I, disillusioned artists and intellectuals were horrified by what they saw. They began to hope that their art could become a political weapon of great inspiration and change. These artists of the early twentieth century began to value the inner emotional and spiritual life for their bold and visually intense works. Expressionism rebelled against traditional art, attempting to revitalize it in unconventional and intense ways. Learn about this powerful, albeit difficult to define, experimental style that portrays both anxiety and renewal. Discover its impact even today and its forerunner and leading artists who dared to ‘go against the norm’ .Then, in the second half of each class, go on to create your own unique painting, influenced by this avant-garde movement. All levels are welcome - experience the joy of creativity!

Instructor: Terri Bowen, BEd, MA, Master Graphologist, is a retired principal of a Learning through the Arts School in Calgary and has taught for VIU ElderCollege for over 10 years.
