COLLAGE: Painting in Papers with John Andrew Dixon | Saturday, February 28 | 10 AM - 5 PM 

This workshop with hands-on exercises enables participants to explore the medium of collage under the direction of an experienced collage artist and to create four “collage miniatures.” Practical instruction will cover materials, methods, and the aesthetics of visual design, with an emphasis on experimentation.
This intensive one-day class is not meant to be an experience merely about craft, but an opportunity to learn techniques within an approach that is always responsive to intuitive spontaneity. The instructor has come to trust that the most interesting and successful
“solutions” are often the least expected ones.
Be prepared to relax and to set aside feelings about individual abilities and to
let go of any pesky thoughts. Together, we are about to share a day’s journey toward the heart of creativity — to paint in papers.

Notes for participants:
• Instructor-provided supplies will include selected paper ingredients, basic adhesives, cups for water and glue, art cloths, and working substrates.
• Workshop participants are encouraged to provide a few found papers and discarded publications. Optional items that may be brought include an apron, burnisher or brayer, used brushes for paste, your favorite pair of scissors, small pieces of sandpaper (fine/medium), plus any special glues/adhesives (no aerosol sprays or volatile substances, please).
• Participants will have the opportunity to work at their own level of experience and degree of manual skill.

Notes: Morning schedule: 10am to 10:30 — Introductory remarks with screen images 10:30 to 11am — Basic Demonstrations / Dixon’s Three Rules of Collage 11am to Noon — Collage Experiments #1 and #2 Noon to 1pm — Break Afternoon schedule: 1 to 2pm — Advanced Demonstrations / Dixon’s Varied Approach 2pm to 4:30 — Collage Experiments #3 and #4 4:30 to 5pm — Group review of collage artwork

Prerequisites: An appreciation for art history is helpful, but not required. A prior knowledge of collage is a bonus!
