Description:

This five-week hands-on course explores the fundamentals of herbal medicine, focusing on identifying, preparing, and using medicinal plants for wellness. Participants will gain practical knowledge in creating tinctures, salves, teas, and more while learning sustainable harvesting techniques. The final session will include an immersive nature walk at the local preserve to identify and collect plants in their natural habitat.

Course Schedule:

  • Week 1 (4/10): Brief history of herbal medicine, how herbs work, energetics, definitions, safety, and ethical harvesting.
  • Week 2 (4/17): Preparation and preservation basics, teas and tinctures, digestive system health, and culinary herbs.
  • Week 3 (4/24): Plants for the nervous system, stress relievers, herbs for heart health, and aromatherapy.
  • Week 4 (5/1): Healthy skin, first aid, salve making, and other creative ways to use herbs.
  • Week 5 (5/8): Immune and respiratory system health, herbs for colds and flu, and Fire Cider.
  • Saturday (5/10): Nature Conservancy Preserve plant walk, identification, and tasting.

About the Instructor:

Mary O’Brien has been studying and practicing herbal medicine since 1987. She has trained with many renowned teachers and completed the Chartered Herbalist program at Dominion Herbal College. A Colorado native, she has lived in Steamboat Springs for over 20 years, where she teaches herbal medicine, leads medicinal plant walks, wildcrafts, makes herbal products, and maintains a medicinal garden at Yampa River Botanic Park.

A minimum of six participants is required for the class to proceed.
