Feb/Spring Maker Camps for Kids | Woodworking | Beginning Youth Woodworking

This introduction to the world of industrial design through woodworking will enable youth new to woodworking to develop modern woodworking skills safely in our community woodshop under the instruction of experienced woodworking instructors.

Students will get hands-on experience using a mini-lathe to turn wood  into finished projects like a wooden pen or magic wand,  an electric planer in the finishing of projects like a laminated cutting board or chess game board, and a bandsaw and drill press to complete projects like an analog clock or a wooden toolbox. Our junior woodworkers are not limited to just these few sample projects, only by their imagination and the tools and time on hand.

In the process of building multiple projects, our junior woodworkers will learn modern wood preparation including measuring, joinery, planning, sanding, routing, lathing, cutting, gluing, and finishing techniques in this action-packed camp. Completion of this beginning woodworking will allow our junior woodworkers to continue onto our advanced woodworking camps that will challenge them to apply their skills to more complex wood projects.

Safety is our top priority, thus closed-toed/heeled shoes are required, as well as form-fitting cloths and the removal of all jewelry. Safety glasses are required in the woodshop. Maker Nexus can provide safety glasses that are sanitized after each use, however, we recommend each student bring their own pair.

Summer Camps for Kids | Woodworking | Advanced Youth Woodworking

This next-step in the world of industrial design through woodworking will enable youth to continue their woodworking interests towards developing modern woodworking skills safely in our community woodshop under the instruction of experienced woodworking instructors.

Students will build upon what they learned in our Beginning Woodworking camps to design and build a more complex finished product. Students will be trained on a greater variety of electric woodworking tools like the electric planer, jointer, and table saw to better stand up to the challenge of  building more demanding projects. Projects are unlimited, but often include laminated cutting board, chess game board set, and a secret-latched box. Only imagination and the tools and time on hand are the limits.

In the process of building multiple projects, our advanced woodworkers will improve their wood preparation skills including measuring, joining, planning, ripping and cross-cutting, routering, lathing, and finishing techniques in this demanding camp. Completion of the Beginning Woodworking camp is required to progress to the Advanced Woodworking camp.

Safety is our top priority, thus closed-toed/heeled shoes and a COVID-compliant mask are required, as well as form-fitting clothes and the removal of all jewelry. Safety glasses are required in the woodshop at all times. Maker Nexus can provide safety glasses that are sanitized after each use, however, we recommend each student bring their own pair.

Maker Nexus exceeds the state mandated standard for certifying instructors.  All Maker Nexus staff, including Instructors, Assistants, and Volunteers are background checked and fingerprinted.

Instruction is provided in English.
