Description:

NOTE: Band is a two-day commitment. Classes run 90 minutes and dismiss at 4:45pm. If your child is interested in joining the band, we strongly encourage enrollment in the fall term.  Instructor permission is required for mid-year considerations. Students from the fall session will be automatically re-enrolled in the winter and spring sessions unless we hear otherwise.

Description Children at the PS 154 After School have the unique opportunity to join our weekly band program for the full school year. Alumni of our program have gone on to study music at some of NYC’s eminent music programs such as Mark Twain Middle School, New Voices Middle School, Laguardia Performing Arts High School, Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School.

The After School Band is made up of two sections — brass and woodwinds. Beginning Band will now also include a percussion section. Brass includes instruments such as trombone, trumpet, and French horn. Woodwinds include instruments such as alto saxophone, clarinet, and flute. Percussionists will start on snare drums. On the first day of beginning band, the instructors give a demonstration of all the available instruments. Each student writes down their first and second choices. From there, Travis and Alex do their best to divide the numbers evenly between brass and woodwinds and give everyone one of their top two choices. Students who are already playing a brass or woodwind instrument may also bring their own instrument to the program.

Registration is for the entire year. The fee for the full year is $2100 ($700 per session), billed in installments, plus a one-time $45 rental fee for any child who uses a PS 154 instrument. Please note the cost of repairing damage or loss to the instrument while in the care of the student is the responsibility of the student’s family. Registrants must participate in both days of band rehearsals to join the program. Students may drop band at any session break and fees will be adjusted accordingly.

Instructors  Travis Bliss is a Brooklyn-based saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, improviser, and educator. Alex Quinn is a trumpet player, composer, and educator who earned his Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from New England Conservatory and has been teaching piano and trumpet privately for a decade.
