Description:
This workshop focuses on developing collaborative aerial performance skills, culminating in a performance 5-15 minutes long. Participants will explore group dynamics and creative composition through partner interactions on the floor and in the air, synchronization, mirroring, tableau, skills/transitions as motifs, and movements in cannon. The emphasis is on ensemble cohesion, while developing trusting relationships with one another and creating lasting collaborative bonds. We will begin each session with research invitations and document skills and sequences that we come up with. Guided games and drills will be provided for inspiration as needed. As the group develops its sense of identity, we’ll come up with an objective (usually a narrative or visual representation) and use that as our goal to refine the piece. At the end of each session, we’ll reflect and share successful moments and frustrations and connect as a group. Our work will be shared at the end of the workshop in a casual “work in progress” setting, with optional Q&A after to discuss the process. This showing can be used to showcase the artists’ individual acts and we can invite artists not involved in the ensemble to share their work as well. Target audience is intermediate aerialists with a solid foundation of aerial technique who are ready to explore group-based movement. Some performance and partnering experience is a plus, but not a prerequisite. Multiple apparatus of the same type, several different apparatus, or one apparatus to be shared are all possibilities to be explored. *See note for specific schedule details!
