The World Discussion Group via Zoom will focus primarily on international events outside of Canada. Attendees will consider events abroad, and related background issues, discussing them to broaden our knowledge and understanding of other parts of the world.

This will be done in a friendly, informal and yet respectful atmosphere, via Zoom (from your home or mobile internet connection), with the discussion led and moderated by Reg Olson.

There will be 7 sessions, Jan 13 to Feb 24, 2025; classes will be from 10:00 am until noon, Pacific Time. Each week we will discuss 1 to 3 topics over 2 hours (including a possible short break of 5 to 10 minutes for coffee/tea or bio).

Acceptable topics will be, for example:

  • recent world events and/or issues (e.g., the ‘fall-out’ from the USA Nov 5 Presidential election)
  • specific countries which have real, or potential, impact on the rest of the world (e.g., Russia, China, India, Iran & some other countries in the Middle East, North Korea, the BRICS countries &, of course, the USA)
  • economic issues (e.g., can ‘Modern Monetary Theory’ really work?)
  • wars and conflicts (such as are now occurring in Ukraine & the Middle East) versus seeking ‘Peace’ via diplomacy
  • the impact of immigration on various parts of the world (e.g., European countries, North America, Australia, etc.)
  • any other topic that attendees think of importance to discuss.

At the first World Events meeting on Jan 13, 2025, Reg will bring a couple of topics for initial discussion. Thereafter, however, the expectation is that at the end of each Monday meeting, at least 2 topics will be identified for discussion at the next meeting. As well,  2 attendees will commit to making a brief introductory overview (5 – 10 minutes max) about each topic at the next meeting. Each topic will be followed by about 45+ or so minutes of discussion (with an individual speaking limit of 2-3 minutes).

Come to this Zoom discussion group if you are interested in world events that are, or may, impact Canada or other parts of the world. Expect to challenge, and be challenged (both respectfully), about the opinions that are expressed.
