Starts & Turns

Designed for swimmers who are new to competitive swimming or wish to refine their skills. This class focuses on the technical skills that make races faster and more efficient. Swimmers will learn the principles of hydrodynamics and how reducing drag and maximizing momentum can improve race performance.

Topics Covered:

  • Hydrodynamics and body position
  • Racing starts from the blocks
  • Streamline technique
  • Underwater dolphin kicking
  • Freestyle and backstroke flip turns
  • Breaststroke and butterfly touch turns
  • Transition skills for faster race performance

This is a skills-focused class intended to complement regular swim team practices. Stroke instruction will not be provided, and the class is not designed to improve swimming endurance or conditioning. Participants should already be comfortable swimming the length of the pool independently and have basic proficiency in the competitive strokes.

  • Swim fins

Swimmers who plan to borrow fins from the YMCA should know their current shoe size to ensure a proper fit.

Required age: 6 - 14 years old on the day of the activity

Notes: When arriving for lessons, please enter through the locker rooms and wait in the corridor between the pool and the locker rooms until class start time.

Prerequisites: Swimmers must have basic diving skills from the side of pool or blocks. Swimmers must be competent in the four competitive strokes, Freestyle (Front Crawl), Backstroke (Back Crawl), Breaststroke, and Butterfly. Swimmers must be comfortable swimming in 9ft deep water. Swimmers do not need previous experience with turning techniques.
