Description:

Registration for this workshop is open!

Join biologist, forager and mycophile Luke Eckstein for an autumn mushroom walk. We'll observe what kinds of mushrooms are fruiting right now, learn and practice basic identification skills, learn about the habits and ecology of the fungi we encounter, and discuss safe and sustainable harvesting of edible mushrooms.

Fungi are often a hidden part of natural communities, but are very important and incredibly fascinating in the many ways they work ‘behind the scenes’ in the landscape. They are a mind-bogglingly diverse group, adapted to every niche of the natural world. Despite sometimes being tough to spot, there are likely mushrooms all around you when you venture into the woods.

In this session, you can expect to learn:

  • Principles of mushroom identification
  • The role fungi play in their local ecology
  • Which mushrooms to look for in the changing seasons
  • Guidelines for safe and sustainable mushroom harvesting

Please note that while Luke will provide information and demonstrations on sustainable harvesting where possible, this workshop will not be focused on edible mushrooms.

Please note: this event will not take place at GOS' Stone Road location.  Participants will receive an email with directions to a meet-up location prior to the workshop.
