Description:
This 4-session class is perfect for someone with some experience working with soft pastels or as a crossover for someone with experience in drawing or painting in another medium. This class builds on the experience gained from a beginning soft pastel class, as well. The student will learn to identify values, use color harmony, apply an understanding of complimentary and analogous colors in an underpainting, and develop a more complex painting by layering colors on sanded paper. Below is the weekly breakdown: Week 1: Intro to pastels: Materials, methods, color harmony, resources, safety. We will all be working from the same photograph that I provide. Week 2: We will continue with the painting from week one to completion, adding color and definition, followed by discussion. Week 3: Using information from the first 2 classes we will begin a new painting, underpainting, and discussion. Week 4: Students will complete their week 3 painting, followed by discussion. About the Instructor: Retiring after 35 years as an RN found Jody Nash free to to make art full time. Jody has now worked in soft pastel for the last 4 years after a lifetime of painting experience in other mediums, mostly working with figures, including printmaking, basketmaking, and sculpture. She received a BFA in 1996 from UC Davis in California, focusing primarily in painting, photography and printmaking. For the last decade she has also focused on basketmaking, but found pastels during the pandemic and fell in love with their buttery wonderfulness. Oddly, Jody had never appreciated landscape until she found pastel, but now she finds it both exciting and grounding. Artist/member: Pittsboro Gallery of Arts, Pastel Society of North Carolina, Chatham Artists Guild. www.jodynashstudio.com.
We will develop a sketch to establish composition, do an initial underpainting using 2 methods to establish values, followed by discussion.
