Description:

This watercolor course is an Intermediate Watercolor class branching out from the basic watercolor techniques. Beginning Watercolor students are welcome and receive special attention learning basics like how to mix beautiful colors with a limited palette from primary, secondary, and analogue colors with simple and fun exercise-paintings as well as values, brushstrokes, washes, composition, contrast and focal points.

Intermediate students will practice more advanced skills like negative painting, painting a variety of skies, landscapes, flowers and painting in different triads etc.

If you are a beginner signing up for this class, do not be intimidated by the word "Intermediate". With some practice at home, a positive attitude and an open mind you will progress quickly and be able to do  projects on an Intermediate level.

"Watercolor is a fine line between making it happen and letting it happen..."

PAINT You can bring the watercolor paints you have as long as you have the colors below. If you need to buy paints, I suggest the following colors based on Van Gogh paints (excellent student grade and reasonably priced). My favorite (more expensive) watercolor paints are made by Daniel Smith. Cobalt Ultra Marine Blue (other brands: Cobalt and Ultra Marine Blue are separate colors), Ultra Marine Deep, Cerulean Blue, Permanent Blue Violet, Azo Yellow Medium (Aureolin in other brands), Azo Yellow Light (Lemon Yellow), Quinacridone Rose (Permanent Rose in other brands), Permanent Red Deep (Cadmium Red in other brands), Sap Green, Burnt Sienna, Sepia, Neutral Tint, Indigo, and White. BRUSHES Types and sizes: Rounds: #4, #8, #12, Flats: (also called “square” or “stroke”) : 3/4 “. If you need to buy as a beginner, I suggest Princeton SNAP Series 9650, 1 inch Mop brush or a large make-up brush will work well for wetting paper. PAPER Strathmore 200 series Pad, 90 lb cold press, 9x12 inch, 15 sheets. This thinner watercolor paper will be used for watercolor sketches, color mixing tests and experiments. Strathmore 300 series tape bound Pad, 140 lb cold press, 11x15 inch, 12 sheets or a 9x12 Strathmore Visual Watercolor Journal, 140 lb cold press, 22 sheets which can be used on both sides. This thicker watercolor paper will be used for paintings. You do need watercolor paper with watercolor paints. If you have some old watercolor paper, please let me know what kind so you will not be disappointed with the end-results.
