Through a visit to botanical gardens in the UK several decades ago, Rob Butler discovered how gardens can provide inspiration and opportunities for bird conservation. That impactful visit led to a career in conservation here in Canada including the development of a bird strategy for the City of Vancouver, an international bird conference, and the writing of his first novel.  His work has been instrumental in inspiring gardeners to consider the many ways their passion for plants can help support wild bird conservation efforts.

In this presentation, Rob will speak about his career in conservation, his passion for both birds and gardens, and will present his new work of historical fiction about a young woman’s quest to escape the humdrum to travel the world as an ornithologist during post-war London.

Letters from Gerald, as well as some of Rob’s non-fiction works, will be available for purchase for in-person guests.

About the speaker:

Rob Butler is unusual among scientists. Besides the more than 150 works for scientific and public audiences, Rob has written books, created art works, produced films, organized international conferences, and spoken hundreds of times to the public and through the media about birds. His accomplishments have been recognized by scores of national and international awards for his research and conservation in Canada and abroad.
