Description:
Do you know that bumblebees are crucial pollinators, responsible for making our blueberry pies richer and fruit salads juicier? Join Jennifer Lipka for a fascinating journey into the secret lives of these fuzzy friends. During this session, you will learn about the important role that bumblebees play in our ecosystem, as well as their enchanting behaviours and physical characteristics. You will also take a leisurely walk through the beautiful VanDusen Botanical Garden, where you will have the opportunity to catch, identify, and release bumblebees using ethical practices followed by the Pacific Northwest Bumble Bee Atlas. But that's not all! You'll also discover how to support bumblebees in your neighbourhood and contribute to citizen science. Bring your phone and Jennifer will show you how to upload bees' information to iNaturalist, a popular citizen science app. By the end of this session, you will have expanded your awareness of the abundance and diversity of bees at VanDusen and gained valuable knowledge that you can apply in your daily life. Please note that the class is weather-dependent, and if there are extreme heat or rain conditions, the session will be cancelled, and a full refund will be issued to the credit card used for registration. Online pre-registration is required. Instructor’s Bio: Jennifer Lipka is a Ph.D. Student at the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at UBC with years of practical experience studying bumble bees in agriculture environments.
