Start date: Saturday, September 10 2022.
Schedule:
Saturday, September 10, 2022, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM ,
Resource person: learn@vandusen.org
Location: VanDusen Botanical Garden - Visitor Centre - Guides Classroom
Description:
Daylilies are an excellent drought-tolerant, easy-care plant and an ideal material for soft basketry: easy on the hands and plentiful in the garden. Join Sharon Kallis, Lead Artist and Executive Director of EartHand Gleaners Society, to learn how to use them as material for rope making and then take that rope into other possible woven forms. Beyond the great joy of using your plants’ die back to quickly twist up beautiful, biodegradable plant supports; rope making is also a core skill in any basket-making journey. Starting with the simple technique of 2-ply rope, participants will then learn how to cable rope into 4-ply and be introduced to the basics of coil basketry and plaited weaving. There will be lots of time for exploration, as well as discussion of what other bounty might await in your garden and the best times of year to consider adding those harvests to your gardening calendar. Expect to leave with a few small samples, lots of inspiration, and the capacity to continue an independent winter weaving journey with success. There will be a 30-minute lunch break; bring a bagged lunch, tea thermos, or water bottle. The Garden Café will be open. Meet at the Visitor Centre and enter the Garden as a group. The entire class is outdoors; rain or shine, dress for the weather. Seats will be available. Materials included. Online pre-registration is required.
