The BlackTusk Alpine Learning Centre at Brohm Ridge is pleased to be hosting its Avalanche Skills Training Program (AST-1). Instruction by BackCountry Safety Training ltd and avalanche guru Niko Weiss. The Blacktusk clubhouse provide a unique learning environment, its location at 6000 feet maximizes field time, interspersed with classroom, and evening discussions. Engaging with other sledders, trading skills, ideas and stories makes the course fun and helps to reinforce knowledge. Enjoy chef prepared, dinner, lunch and breakfast.

In this course you will learn the skills and knowledge required to understand the risk of avalanches, recognize terrain and conditions that create them, reduce or manage risk while sledding in avalanche areas, utilize Public Avalanche Bulletins and other decision making tools and effect a self or companion rescue using beacon probe and shovel.

Not included in the price:

Transport to and from the course, personal clothing and equipment including your sled.

*Self supplied sled, beacon, probe, shovel in good working order

You must provide: overnight gear - warm sleeping bag, pillow, indoor shoes, Saturday lunch, beverages, snacks (some gear can be transported via the snow cat)

*please advise if you have food allergies. Special diets not accommodated.

Course Outline: 2 day course:

Day 1

 

8:30am to Noon Avalanche Theory

12:30 Lunch (self supplied)

1pm to 4 Field training transceiver training, avalanche terrain assessment, snow pack

4:30 to 6 classroom Theory

6:00 Dinner

Day 2

7:30 Breakfast - pack up gear for transport on snowcat

8:30am to 10 Trip Planning

10 to 11:45 field rescue scenarios

11:45 to 12:30 lunch

12:30 to 3:00 avalanche field day

3 to 4pm Wrap up and discussion

Students need to bring: avalanche gear-(backpack/shovel/probe/beacon), snowmobile in good working order.
