PRINTMAKING

Welcome to the Community Screen-Print Open Shop at YAX! This is a space for you to come make your screen prints. We welcome adults of all experience levels. (Teens can check out Youth Open Studios on Wednesdays). Everything is completely free to use. We ask that you leave us one of your prints for our archive in return.

Open Shop is 10 AM- 2 PM every 2nd and 4th Sunday, starting in April and continuing through September.

To screenprint, just bring in an image printed on transparency at a max size of max width of 14" x 20" (Transparencies can be printed at Fedex Office) A drawing on transparency/tracing paper drawn with an opaque ink pen like Micron, Oil Based or India Ink works well. Drawing supplies are available to use at our space if you need.

You can rent up to two screens for the night by reserving it via SmartRec. Our screens can support a transparency image up to 14" x 20".  If you are running late for your rental, shoot us a message via print@youthartexchange.org. If we don't hear from you 30 minutes after your rental time, we may give your screen to somebody on the waitlist.

Please allow at least 2 hours to print your transparency, burn your screen, and print, and arrive early enough to give yourself time to complete your project and clean up. Projects are self-directed. Studio Managers are available to assist you as much as you need.

Bring whatever you want print on and be sure to bring at least 10 items to print on, including one for us to keep for our archive. While our facilities are best for printing on paper, you're welcome to try fabric. If you print on clothing, make sure to bring clothes hangers to dry your work.

If you are curious about the space or new to screen print, you are welcome to come say “hi”, see the space, and ask questions. Please email print@youthartexchange.org with any questions too!

FAQs

Is this a class?

This is not a class. You come with your own project. Studio Managers are available to assist you as much as you need.

Can I bring my child to Open Shop?

While YAX programs center youth, this Open Shop is geared towards adults. Teens 13+ are welcome to come as collaborators with an adult. That means you work on the project together. If you are under _ years and have your own project, check out our Youth Open Studio! Some exceptions may apply to YAX alumni with permission from a Studio Manager.

If I am on the waitlist, should I come anyway?

Yes! We will prioritize people who are in the studio in-person on the waitlist in the case of a “no-show”.

I have never screen printed before and I don’t know where to begin. What do I do?

Come see the space and talk with a studio manager. You don’t need to reserve anything online. Just come say hi:)

I have a huge print run to produce. What is your capacity?

Since this is a community space, we want the space to work the best for the most people possible. If we can make it work without keeping others from making their prints, we want to make it happen. If you have a larger project idea that you are unsure about, come by to the studio to talk about it with us.
