Description :
This course will encourage and support you to think about and express your wishes for future health care and treatment. It is designed to provoke thinking and planning and to encourage conversation between you, your loved ones and your health care providers. Planning in advance can assure you that your family, friends, and health care providers know your wishes and can ensure your wishes are followed. Personal planning legislation was revised in 2011. This provides more options for capable adults to express their wishes for future health care. Adults can put in place plans that outline the health care treatments they consent to or refuse based on their beliefs. If no plan is in place the health care consent legislation gives direction regarding who can make health care decisions on behalf of the adult if they are no longer capable. Instructor: JoAnn Dunderdale BSN MA, retired RN, with over 37 years of experience in clinical nursing, teaching and health care management. Her last 20 years of work were in Home and Community Care Island Health. During this time she was one of two Island Health Managers working with the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee and the Ministry of Health to develop the Adult Guardianship legislation which includes the Health Care Consent and Facilities Admission Act. This Act specifies who should be approached if the adult patient is unable to provide consent. During her experience working with patients, their families and health care providers, it became clear that health care decisions were made that may not have always reflected the values and beliefs of the patient. JoAnn currently volunteers with Oceanside Hospice and provides support and education for advance care planning for individuals and groups.
