Climate change and the rapid loss of biodiversity represent two of the most urgent challenges facing humanity. This course explores how we arrived at this critical moment, the factors that continue to shape it, and the actions that may yet alter our trajectory. We will examine human behaviour, cultural and scientific drivers, and the complex variables contributing to these crises. The growing role of artificial intelligence will also be considered—asking whether it can be harnessed as a tool for solutions before it becomes a risk itself.

Instructor: Daniel Lordahl holds a BA, MS, and PhD in experimental psychology and taught for 38 years at four universities, specializing in human cognition, experimental design, and statistics. His research and publications span diverse topics, including motor skills, time perception, and mathematical modelling. Since retiring in the 1990s, he has pursued a wide range of interests—studying quantum mechanics, game theory, climate change, and evolution, while also engaging in music (violin), astronomy, investment, and writing. He has enriched his learning by auditing numerous courses through “Great Courses Plus.”
