Description :
Discover the remarkable diversity of marine life found right here in the Salish Sea. Over two class sessions and a guided local beach walk, participants will explore sea stars, crabs, shellfish, and intertidal fishes while learning about the complex ecosystems that support them. The course will also examine current threats to ocean health and biodiversity, including rising ocean temperatures, increasing acidity, invasive species, sea star wasting disease, and Species at Risk. Participants will discuss ways to document and appreciate marine life through photography and tools like iNaturalist. Historical topics such as “Coal and Clams,” early collections, and local fishing practices will also be explored. Instructor: Rick Harbo, marine biologist and photographer has written marine life guides and scientific papers on marine invasive species. A former habitat biologist and resource manager for Fisheries and Oceans Canada, he currently volunteers as a Research Associate, Natural History, Royal BC museum.
