Description :
Every word has a story to tell. This course explores the fascinating origins of English — our “mother tongue” — and the many twists and turns that shaped it into the language we use today. Where did English begin? How has it changed over the centuries? And why is its spelling such a challenge? Instructor: David Hobson was born and grew up in Victoria, BC. He attended the University of Victoria (History and German with 3 years of Russian), spent 3 years in Hamburg, Germany, and was teaching assistant at UCLA. Hobson holds a Masters degree in German. He taught high school in Prince George and Parksville (French and German), retired in 2004, lived in Nanaimo and finally on Gabriola Island.
Together, we’ll trace the development of English from Old English through Middle English to Modern English, discovering how words have evolved from AD 450 to 1450. You’ll learn about the influences of French, Latin, and Greek, and explore how English became the world’s most widely studied language, with over 1.5 billion learners.
Along the way, expect surprising stories behind familiar and lesser-known words — and a few linguistic curiosities that might change how you think about the language we speak every day.
