Description :
This course examines the historical development of the United States to develop a clearer understanding of how its society, culture, and institutions evolved over time. Through discussion of key figures, critical events, and influential ideas, students will trace the forces that have shaped the American experience and continue to influence it today. Part II focuses on the period from the Civil War to World War I, a transformative era that saw the nation tested and redefined. Topics will include Reconstruction and its legacy, westward expansion, industrialization, immigration, social reform movements, and America’s emergence onto the world stage. Together, these themes provide insight into how the foundations of modern America were built during a time of extraordinary change and challenge. Instructor: Brett Bowen attended the University of Calgary for both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Upon graduation he began work with the Calgary Board of Education as (primarily) a teacher of social studies, humanities, and history.
