Supporting children who have a sibling with chronic illness or special needs.
Description
Mission The mission of the Bus Stop Club is to provide support and family memories through encouragement for the siblings of children with serious illness or developmental, physical, or intellectual disabilities. Vision To ensure that our siblings have the ability to feel understood, valued, and connected to each other and the community. At Bus Stop Club, our work with children and families is our top priority. Siblings of children with chronic illnesses are more likely to suffer feelings of anger, jealousy, depression, and anxiety. They are also more likely to do poorly in school, abuse drugs, and suffer from mental illness as adults (Derouin & Jessee, 1996). Bus Stop Club establishes safe opportunities for the children to learn how to express themselves, cope with difficulties at home, and also allows the children to experience fun outings that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to do so due to their siblings' illness or disability. Bus Stop Club supports children 5 to 15 years of age in the Capital District (Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, and Saratoga Counties) and their families.
