REDMOND PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT’S YOUTH BASKETBALL PHILOSOPHY
The purpose of the youth basketball league is to encourage young athletes to learn about the sport, develop their basketball skills, and learn to interact with other children in a positive manner.

Participating in this program offers young athletes the opportunity to enhance their self-esteem and develop teamwork skills. To cultivate these abilities effectively, it's crucial to establish a positive atmosphere characterized by constructive, enjoyable, and non-threatening interactions. Inappropriate conduct undermines the objectives of our league, so we urge coaches, parents, and players to uphold the utmost sportsmanship in their behavior.

TEAM FORMATIONS
Teams are assigned by the Parks & Recreation Department. Teams are typically organized by elementary or middle schools. Participants must register according to the school they attend.  Players from surrounding communities, organizations or private schools not listed above, should register to play with the school nearest their home unless there are enough kids from their school to form a team.  Each team will ideally have between 8-11 players.  Sometimes more or less than this will be assigned to teams.  If there are less than eight or more than twelve players, teams may be divided or players may be requested to combine with another school.  Teams are formed according to the schools the children attend for the following reasons:

        1.    To enhance the peer group relationship between players.
        2.    To enable practices to take place close to the child's residence.
        3.    To aid parents in transportation by providing for a central pooling place.

Note: Volunteer coaches must inform the league coordinator before the conclusion of registration if they are planning to coach with someone else.  We will assign each head coach ONE assistant coach and their child upon request, but cannot guarantee multiple assistant coaches.

Part-Time Employment Opportunities: This is an excellent part-time employment opportunity for students (16+), young adults, or anyone looking to get some exercise that has a general knowledge of the sport. Volunteer Opportunities: The Referee in Training Program is perfect if you are a student ages 14-15 and have an interest in basketball. VOLUNTEER COACHES
We rely on you, the volunteer, to ensure the success of the youth basketball program. The Parks Department is now recruiting volunteer coaches. If you are interested in contributing to the success of this year’s basketball program.

Required Coaches Training's:

• Coaches Meeting: 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 24, 2024, at Redmond Community Center at Marymoor Village
• Coaches On Court Clinic: Time - TBA on Oct. 26, 2024

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When are practices and where are they located?
You will receive a phone call or an email from the coach the week of Oct. 28 concerning your child's practice time/date/location.  Teams will get a one hour practice during the week and then games will be on Saturdays.  The coach will determine the practice time/day/location based on their availability.  Practices are held at the local Redmond schools.

What if my child's practice time does not work for our schedule?
If your practice time/date/location does not work for you the parks and recreation staff can work with you to try and find another team but there are no guarantees.  If all options are exhausted we can give a full refund.

What does my child wear for practices/games?
The suggested attire for practices are gym shorts, a shirt, and basketball shoes.  Jerseys will be provided for games that the kids will be able to keep!

Are there buddy requests?
There are no buddy requests.  However, for grades 1-5 we try our best to keep kids at the same school within their grade level.  For grades 6-12 we do our best to make all teams competitive while considering where kids go to school.

Processing Fee

Beginning Dec. 2, there will be a processing fee for all credit and debit card payments of 2.75% plus $0.30 per transaction.
