Description :

Capture the cheerful beauty of a black-capped chickadee perched among vibrant holly leaves and berries in this guided watercolor class.

Students will be led step-by-step through the painting process, learning how to build a detailed bird using transparent washes, layering, blending, and careful changes in value. We will explore the different areas and feather structures of the chickadee and use subtle variations of warm browns, blacks, grays, and golden yellows to create depth and dimension.

We will then paint the surrounding holly leaves, learning how to layer several shades of green and use light and dark values to give the foliage dimension. Students will finish the composition with a natural branch and bright red berries, using highlights and shadows to create the appearance of overlapping berries and bring the painting to life.

Along the way, students will practice wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques, color mixing, layering, blending, brush control, and adding fine details. The class is designed to be approachable for beginning watercolor painters while giving more experienced students opportunities to refine their skills.

Students will leave class with a completed Chickadee & Holly watercolor painting and a better understanding of how to use watercolor to create realistic birds and botanical elements.
