Description :
Celebrate the colors and atmosphere of fall while creating a charming watercolor of a crow perched atop a pumpkin. Inspired by the quiet, earthy landscapes and limited color palette of American artist Andrew Wyeth, this class explores how watercolor can be used to create mood, texture, depth, and rich natural color.
Students will be guided step-by-step through the entire painting process, beginning with a soft atmospheric sky and textured ground before building the warm layers of the pumpkin, weathered wooden post, and dark crow. Along the way, we will explore wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry watercolor techniques, layering and color mixing, dry brushing, and creative ways to produce organic texture using a sea sponge and plastic wrap.
We will also look briefly at Andrew Wyeth's work and consider how his use of muted earth tones, texture, and simple rural subjects can inspire our own approach to this fall scene.
This class is designed to be approachable for beginning watercolor painters while offering techniques and opportunities for experimentation that more experienced painters can enjoy. Students will leave class with a completed watercolor painting of The Crow & the Pumpkin.
