Temari (te – hand and mari – ball) is a centuries-old traditional Japanese technique of embroidery, usually done in ball form. The balls were originally made from materials at hand as play things for children and have evolved into elaborate pieces of art that symbolize love and luck. While modern materials can be used for the art, beautiful temari can be created from humble components such as rice hulls, dryer lint and thrums from other fiber projects, making it a perfect way to create beauty from what would otherwise be trash. In this workshop, Cate Buchanan will introduce different traditional designs that can be created in this fascinating craft. Participants will be able to create two different temari) during the workshop from pre-wrapped mari. Participants will also learn about making and preparing mari for future projects from different materials such as stryofoam, dryer lint and rice hulls.

Supply fee of $45 paid to the instructor covers supplies for three maris, thread and basic supplies needed
