Description :

A Playful Process - Studio Intensive/3-day Workshop:

Getting playful in the studio and shaking things up. Coral Patola of Piton Pottery will be instructing a workshop centered on cultivating A Playful Process.

Here’s a chance to peak into my process and learn how I bring a sense of play and experimentation back into my studio practice. I’ll demonstrate how I continue to keep my product production engaging and fulfilling. With insights into how I start a new series or collection starting with the quintessential mug form. This workshop is ideal for the intermediate student who needs a little bump in a new direction or someone looking to get their creative inspiration flowing again.

A Playful Process: is a hands-on 3-day workshop that will focus on creating a variety of mug forms with personality. Using wheel throwing techniques to create expressive forms through proportions and scale, we will cover throwing-off-the-hump, pulling handles, trimming feet and adding decoration. Surface decoration will focus on the use of slips for added texture and underglazes for painting. We will be using the mug form to learn the basics of these throwing techniques, allowing for practice and multiple iterations within the class time and then scaling up the techniques for medium sized vessels. The first day will focus on wheel-throwing, making a variety of base forms that we will continue with on the second day. Day two will consist of trimming, the addition of handles, and any form alterations. On the final day, we will play with adding surface decoration to our forms, using slip for texture and underglaze painting. By the end of the workshop we will aim to have 6-8 items per student that would be prepared for a future firing, not included in the course time.

Who is the intensive for?

*Intermediate, Adult Student - for the purposes of this course an intermediate student would be considered someone who is able to comfortably throw & trim on the wheel independently. Students will need to know how to center for throwing and trimming. Individual attention/instruction will be offered to students who find the techniques challenging but no hand-holding/physical guidance (ghosting).

Please bring to the workshop:
● Water bottle, lunch/snack
● notebook/sketchbook + writing utensils
● Please tie back any long hair behind your shoulders
● Trimmed finger nails are also advised
● If you have your own favorite tools please feel free to bring them along, you may want to write your name on them in permanent marker or keep them separated in a ziplock bag
