*NEW WORKSHOP FOR 2026!*

Horror has always been a great genre for young filmmakers getting their start. It's possible to make a great scary movie without a budget, a star, or a studio - all you need is a great idea and the right moviemaking techniques to make something unforgettable.

In this brand-new workshop, high school students will learn about the craft and art of horror filmmaking from beginning to end. We'll explore the secrets of writing a scary story with the power of suggestion. We'll dive into lighting and camera techniques that build atmosphere and dread slowly - then learn to craft the perfect jumpscare through editing. We'll discover the low-budget hacks that made for some of cinema's most frightening moments.

Along the way, we'll discuss how horror has been a tool for filmmakers to comment on human nature, comment on society and culture, and make bold, imaginative movies with limited resources.

At the end of the week, each small group will have a complete short horror film. Join us to watch them on the big screen... if you dare! This workshop counts as one Special Skills credit towards the Light House Achievement Award. Visit lighthousestudio.org/achievement-award for more information.

Tuition assistance is available for all Light House workshops. To apply, fill out the Tuition Assistance application and wait for a response from our staff with further instructions.
