Description :
This class discusses the professional field of illustration, exploring different avenues of illustration, including editorial illustration, fashion illustration, scientific illustration, surface design, advertising, and more. Students will be introduced to different tools, processes, and working methods. We’ll talk about quotes, invoicing, how to find work, and more. Students will leave each session with a new handout of resources (e.g. links, books, organizations) to learn more about each topic. We will develop critical thinking skills and learn the basic vocabulary for the world of design and illustration. Classes will be comprised of slideshow presentations, discussion, and illustration homework assignments. This class is great for someone who’s considering a career in illustration, but it’s also helpful for illustrators who are already 1-5 years into their professional career, for folks who want to dabble in illustration as a side hustle, and for folks who are just interested in selling their artwork on cards and merchandise. Students are encouraged to have some background in drawing already, and access to drawing tools (primarily traditional materials, but digital tools are also welcome). ------------------------------------------- About the Instructor: Jenna Lechner is an illustrator and art instructor based in Portland, OR.
