A Métis cultural and historical learning journey that includes an interactive learning presentation
weaving personal and borrowed stories on the connections between the Métis sash, the Red River Cart,
Métis beadwork, the Plains Bison, and the various names given to the Métis throughout history and the
stories behind these names.

• Interactive presentation with samples of Métis accessories
• Visual aids on Plains Bison – Introduction on how the bison was used by the Métis.
o Métis Sash – Introduction on its origins, uses, and significance of the colors.
o Red River Cart – Introduction on how it was built, uses, and significance to the
Métis.
o Wearable Art – Introduction to some of the key characteristics found with the
decorative art on clothing and other items.
o Métis names – Stories behind the various names that were given to the Métis
people over time.

Activity

• Basic introductory activity to the art of beading (all supplies included)
• Stories on the “Evolution of Beadwork”
• Stories on how beadwork tells the story of the Métis way of life
