Description :

This course offers an introduction to the craftmanship of oil painting and trains participants to develop observation, color mixing, and painting skills. We will do an introductory painting exercise and two still-life studies during the seven-session workshop. We will cover the use of materials, the study of color, paint physicality and application, composition, and the representation of objects' characteristics and textures, such as glass, fabrics, flowers, etc. This class is for beginners, painting enthusiasts, and advanced artists interested in learning different methodologies. For ages 16+.

About the Instructor: Renzo Ortega (Lima, Perú 1974) received a BFA from the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes del Perú, studied at the Art Students League of New York, and has his MFA in painting from Hunter College in New York. His recent solo exhibitions have been at Craven Allen Gallery in Durham, North Carolina (2024), TW-Fine Art in Palm Beach(2022), and LUMP Gallery in Raleigh, North Carolina (2021). Renzo's artwork has been on view at the NASHER Museum of Art, the Cameron Art Museum, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art SECCA, The Weatherspoon Art Museum in North Carolina, the S- Files Biennial at El Museo del Barrio and the Queens International Biennial at the Queens Museum in New York. He is a recipient of the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Individual Support Grant, the North Carolina Arts Council Artist Fellowship Award, the Ella Fountain Pratt Emerging Artists Grant Durham Arts Council, and the Orange County Arts Commission Artist Project Grant. In 2013, as a Kossak Travel Grant recipient, Renzo traveled to Berlin to study German Expressionism. In 2015, he traveled to Honduras as a part of the U.S. Department of Cultural Affairs Cultural Envoy Program. Renzo partook in the Visiting Artist Residency at the Rubenstein Arts Center at Duke University in 2019. In 2020, he was the inaugural artist of the West Palm Beach New Wave Art Wknd artist-in-residence program. And have been commissioned to create public art projects and community murals. Renzo has been a Visiting Lecturer at UNC Chapel Hill and a Brock Family Visiting Studio Arts Instructor at Duke University, teaching painting and drawing. www.renzoortega.com.

BRUSHES: - A set of Long-handle brushes of different sizes and shapes. - Please make sure you are buying long-handle, not short-handle. MEDIUMS AND SOLVENTS: - 1 Gamblin Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits (16oz.) - 1 Gambiln Safflower Oil (8.5oz.). Linseed oil and Turpenoid are optional. - 1 Silicoil Brush Cleaner Tank (great for cleaning brushes). IMPORTANT: Bring a small squeezable bottle. OIL COLORS: Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow, Burnt Sienna, Mars Black, Titanium White (large tube). Optional: Any other green, orange, and violet oil colors. OTHER NEEDED SUPPLIES: - One wooden or plastic painter palette (not glass or transparent). - Disposable paper painter palettes are optional. - One Palette Knife. - Charcoal or regular pencils. - A medium-sized lidded glass or plastic container (like a food jar). - Cloth rags or an old T-shirt. - Apron.
