Start date: Friday, May 29 2026.

Schedule:

 Friday, 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM ,

Resource person: Audra Bullard

Description:

There are emergencies that a beloved pet would not survive without home
intervention prior to seeking veterinary care. When the closest after-hours pet
clinic is a two-hour drive away, the need for pet first aid training is critical. This hands-on seminar will cover accident scene safety, physical exam, restraint and handling, internal emergencies (e.g. poisoning, electrocution, seizures), external emergencies (e.g. snake bite, fractures, wounds), avoidance of animal emergencies, and basic first aid measures. Participants will utilize a dog CPR mannequin to practice CPR and the Heimlich maneuver. Proceeds from this program will be donated to a charity of the instructor’s choosing.

After selling her veterinary practice of 25 years, Dr. Joanne Roesner fulfilled her dream of living in the mountains of Western NC. She resides in Scaly Mountain with her Golden Retriever son, Nelson Mandela, and a three-legged cat son, Frankie. Her property is a Certified Native Plant, Pollinator and Wildlife Habitat. Dr. Roesner graduated from the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 1986. She completed a Rotating Internship
at Auburn University in 1987. Ever the closet academic, she sought Specialist status and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in 2000. Her brief efforts at retirement were unsuccessful and she currently works two days a week at Rabun Animal Hospital. The rest of her veterinary efforts are devoted to helping underserved animals and people pro bono and to volunteering with local rescues.
