Center for Life Enrichment
Life Enrichment Opportunities through Education, Art and More!
Start date: Monday, July 6 2026.
Schedule:
Monday, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM ,
Resource person: Audra Bullard
Description:
America’s Revolution exploded from specific grievances against British imperial policies and constructed a new kind of national political system, but its global impact came from the universalizing message of the Declaration of Independence. This program will focus on how the Declaration of 1776 transformed the revolutionary movement into a struggle for ideas and political principles that sustained the long military struggle against Great Britain and influenced the French Revolution of 1789. We’ll explore two key questions: how did the Declaration of Independence define an American national identity that has retained its political and cultural power for 250 years? And how did the French Revolution both use and revise America’s description of human rights and free nations?
Lloyd Kramer is a Professor Emeritus of History and a former chair of the History Department at UNC, Chapel Hill, where he also served for ten years as the Director of Carolina Public Humanities.
