This talk will review the most famous political scandal of the Belle Epoque, l’Affaire Dreyfus, when a Jewish officer in the French army was falsely charged as a spy. Over ten years, the affair consumed France and the world, exposing widespread virulent antisemitism and the difficulty of establishing multicultural democracy in an age of nationalism. The questions it raised are increasingly relevant with the rise of identitarian movements and the promotion of conspiracy theories in our politics. Unfortunately, much of what we’ll discuss about the events of the 1890s will be all too familiar today.

Max Owre is the Executive Director of Carolina Public Humanities. A graduate of the University of Vermont, he obtained his PhD in modern European history from UNC-CH in 2008. Max has been a lecturer in the History Department at UNC-Chapel Hill since 2007, teaching courses in European, world and colonial history. Max is a principal organizer, and frequent host and moderator of CPH Events. He also lectures frequently for CPH on various topics in French and European history
