Description:
Color can be one of the most frustrating aspects of painting, but it can also be the defining aspect of a successful piece of art. This two day workshop will provide artists with a clearer understanding of seeing, interpreting and mixing strong color palettes. Using one subject and a color wheel, we will set up 4 different palettes applied to four quick paintings. Students will leave understanding how to mix lights and darks by using colors that provide beauty and depth, colors that are never “muddy.” We will talk about color as value and the “zen” of mixing color on the palette, before we put our brushes to the painting surface. Materials included: Pre-cut rag paper, gouache paint, pencil, take home color wheel, brushes, and subject materials. Presenter: Norma Hendrix has been an exhibiting artist for over 40 years. She holds a BFA, an MA, and an MFA. She studied color theory under Joseph Canzani, founder of the Columbus College of Art and Design, who studied under American painter and colorist Hans Hoffman. She has been an artist in residence and presenter at Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA, The Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT, and Atelier Four Winds, Aureille, France and Corris, Wales. She was a professor of Drawing, Life Drawing, Painting and Art History for 10 years at Western Carolina University. Hendrix participates in international cultural exchange through artist residencies and artist lectures. Most recently, she presented an arts based paper at the International Conference of Autoethnography, July, 2022, Bristol, England. Hendrix’s artwork is held in private and public collections in the US, France, England and Wales.
