Resource person: Audra Bullard

Description:

Although the Declaration of Independence emerged within a specific
American context, its legacy has reappeared in social struggles and national cultures that the authors of the Declaration never imagined in 1776. This program will examine how the themes of America’s founding document were adapted and expanded in movements to abolish slavery, advance women’s rights, justify anti-colonial movements, and develop nationalist political systems around the world. This discussion of modern political cultures will emphasize global responses to the Declaration of Independence as well as the critiques of universal themes among later advocates of ethnic and religious nationalisms. Have the uses and abuses of the Declaration over the last two centuries affirmed or undermined the document’s claims for “unalienable rights” as anti-democratic movements attract support in diverse nations around the world?
