Join CLE for an engaging and interactive performance at the Highlands Biological Station’s amphitheater as actress Anne Van Curen brings history to life, transforming into Emma “Grandma” Gatewood, the remarkable woman who became the first female to solo hike the Appalachian Trail in 1955. Through Van Curen’s captivating portrayal, audiences will step into Grandma Gatewood’s shoes, experiencing the trials, triumphs, and unwavering determination that defined her legendary journey. This dramatization is drawn from the book “Grandma Gatewood’s Walk” which weaves together accounts from Gatewood’s surviving family members, her own diaries and trail journals, and contemporary newspaper and magazine articles. Attendees will gain a vivid understanding of what motivated Gatewood to take on the grueling 2,168-mile trail at a time when women on such adventures were virtually unheard of. The performance invites the audience to connect directly with Gatewood’s story—her humor, grit, and insight into the natural world around her. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an outdoor adventurer, or simply inspired by extraordinary personal stories, this interactive experience offers an unforgettable glimpse into the life of a true trailblazer.

Programs that include food, beverage or art materials must be canceled within three (3) weeks prior in order to receive a refund. CLE reserves the right to cancel a program if the minimum enrollment has not been met or for circumstances beyond our control, and participants will be notified, a complete refund will be issued. All classes are held in the CLE Lecture Hall at the Peggy Crosby Center unless otherwise noted. In the event information has changed from the published brochure, it will be posted on our website and in our e-blasts. Addresses for “private home” venues will be provided to registrants within 2 days of the program date.
