Description:

Big tech firms are investing millions in advanced nuclear reactors and plan to build scores of reactors to meet data center power demands. The U.S. and Japan announced a partnership to invest $100 billion in new U.S. nuclear reactors, while the Saudis have pledged to spend billions on U.S. reactors in the Kingdom. The Department of Defense has named nine sites to host microreactors to provide base power, and the Department of Energy has selected 11 projects for a wave of nuclear reactor demonstrations in 2026. Why all the interest in nuclear energy, what is the status and outlook for these initiatives, and what might this mean for the future of nuclear energy in the Southeast?

From 2015-2017, John served as Acting Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy in the U.S. Department of Energy. John was Staff Director to the Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future, which in 2012 recommended a new strategy for the U.S. nuclear waste management program.
