This talk will survey the political and cultural origins of the Putin regime and follow its development through Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Authoritarianism and militarism in today’s Russia are not permanent or resurgent features of Russian politics over the centuries; they have their roots in recent decades. Indeed it is the hyper-capitalist 1990s, rather than even the Soviet period, which best explains Russia’s apparent regression. The war in Ukraine, for its part, might best be understood as part of an ongoing Soviet collapse—a process that appeared sudden and rapid at the time of that country’s dissolution, but in fact will continue to unfold across northern Eurasia for a long time to come.

Joseph Kellner received his PhD in history from the University of California, Berkeley in 2018, and is now assistant professor of Russian and Soviet history at the University of Georgia. His book, “The Spirit of Socialism: Culture and Belief at the Soviet Collapse,” is the first cultural history of the end of the Soviet Union.
