This session covers the history of U.S. and Iranian relations from the Constitutional Revolution of 1906 to the war of 2026 and the present day. The talk covers four key historical episodes and addresses the following key questions: (1) Why did the United States help to orchestrate the coup d’etat that overthrew the democratically elected government in Iran in 1953? (2) Why did the Iranians take American diplomats hostage in 1979, and why did the U.S. sell weapons to Iran in the Iran-Contra Affair just four years after the end of the “Hostage Crisis”? (3) Why did the shortlived cooperation between the U.S. and Iran against the Taliban regime in Afghanistan give way to increased conflict between the two powers in Iraq? (4) What are the possible outcomes of the war of 2026 (unknown as the date of this writing)?
