J. Edgar Hoover was born in Washington D.C. in 1895 and never left. A lawyer by training he joined the Justice Department during World War I and by age 29 was running the Bureau of Investigation, the forerunner of the FBI He served as its director until his 1972 death, amassing a personal power base that led many to claim he was the most powerful man in America. Though lauded for building the FBI. into a world-class crime-fighting agency, after his death there were multiple revelations of his controversial and illegal actions that led to intimidation and coercion of some of the United States’ most noteworthy public
figures, indiscretions that led to a change in the law limiting the Director of the agency to a maximum ten-year term. Our session will review the life of this man, one of the most controversial figures in American history.

 

A Pittsburgh area native, Rick Kistner has lectured on various topics for over twenty years. Based on his dual professional career in local government administration and the performing arts, his topics primarily focus on American History, Biography, and Film and Theater. He holds a BA in Urban Studies from Wright State University and a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Dayton. He served as an adjunct faculty member at two colleges. Since 2006, he has delivered over 500 programs for the OLLI and Road Scholar programs at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL.

All classes are held in the CLE Lecture Hall at the Peggy Crosby Center unless otherwise noted. Addresses for “private home” venues will be provided to registrants within 2 days of the program date.
