Artificial intelligence and powerful technology companies are changing
journalism around the world. This program looks at how these shifts are affecting local news not only in the United States, but across democratic countries globally. As platforms and AI tools increasingly shape what information people see, many communities are losing reliable local reporting—raising important questions about civic life and democracy. This talk explores shared challenges facing local journalism worldwide, including economic pressures, platform influence, and changing audience habits, while also highlighting promising efforts to rebuild strong local news systems.

 

Marisa Porto is the Knight Chair in Local News and Sustainability at the Hussman School of Journalism and Media at the University of North Carolina and leads the Center for Innovation and Sustainability in Local Media. She works to strengthen local journalism in the United States and internationally, focusing on how technology, artificial intelligence, and large platforms affect news, communities, and democracy. Her work centers on practical solutions for sustaining local news and supporting informed public life.

All classes are held in the CLE Lecture Hall at the Peggy Crosby Center unless otherwise noted. Addresses for “private home” venues will be provided to registrants within 2 days of the program date.
