Start date: Monday, July 20 2026.

Schedule:

 Monday, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM ,

Resource person: Audra Bullard

Description:

The practice of public health in
America is undergoing unprecedented
transformation. The seeds for the changes now occurring
existed prior to the COVID-19 pandemic; however, this national
crisis contributed to their growth and blossom. Americans
were challenged to balance individual autonomy with
social responsibility in very personal terms. For some, these
experiences contributed to an erosion of trust in public health
institutions, in particular the U.S. Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC). In 2024, the electorate chose leaders
whose appointed officials are now reframing how public health
policy is made and implemented in this country. The impact
of these changes to the health of Americans will be profound.
This lecture will review and contextualize ongoing changes in
America’s public health systems, as well as provide a forum
to discuss their genesis and the challenges and opportunities
they are creating.

Dr. John Brooks is an infectious diseases expert who served 26 years at the CDC. He is widely recognized for his work in HIV. During his CDC tenure, he also held leadership positions during multiple emergencies including COVID-19, for which he was the chief medical officer. Dr. Brooks joined CDC in 1998 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer (‘disease detective’) after completing medical school, a residency in internal medicine, and a fellowship in infectious diseases through Harvard Medical School.
